How long have you been involved in farming?
I was born and raised on the farm near Gladstone, MB (AKA. Happy Rock). My dad started farming in 1978. He has taken a step towards retirement and my two brothers now manage the family farm along with their own land full time. I live in Winnipeg with my wife and two daughters, but try to get back when I can to help during the busy times. I have a quarter section that my brothers farm for me so I guess I am kind of a farmer right? 🤣
What do you grow?
The farm has always grown a rotation of canola and wheat but also introduced corn, soybeans, rye, and yellow peas into the rotation over the last 10 years. I personally grow vegetables on my small city farm. We had a heck of a crop of cucumbers last year so we got a good pickle supply for the winter. The deer got into the beets though, so we might have to figure out a better defense mechanism.
How did you get into farming?
The farm has always been in the family. For me personally, I left the farm in 2002 to go to University of Manitoba. After grabbing a degree in Agribusiness, I started working for a grain marketing advisory service in Winnipeg, MB. After 7 years I decided to move on and start my own grain marketing service called Grain Shark. We are in our 11th year of operation (2013-2024), and help over 1000 farms in Canada!
What do you love about farming?
I love the independence that comes with farming. You get to plan your day out the way you want (for the most part). I love the sense of accomplishment that comes at the end of each year. Especially the successful years when the bins are right full and we have made some good contracts to deliver against right off the combine. I love how farming brings the family together, especially during harvest. Even though we are working long days and into the night, there is always time for some good laughs to keep everyone going.
What's currently in your pockets?
My phone and my kids snack wrappers. I don't even carry a wallet now with how handy the phone has become. Quick tap here, quick tap there. You can do pretty much everything with it now.
What do you do when you aren't marketing grain?
Lately I have been spending most of my free time chasing kids around, taking kids to events, making sure kids are fed, and all the other fun stuff that comes with raising a family. I also enjoy hockey & golf (watching and playing), live music, camping, and playing board games. I'm looking forward to the kids being a bit older so we can dig into some good 4-player games.
